I noticed that everyone has different ways of seeing things. each conversation may be the same but the words used are different.. Each conversation has a backstory that others can only imagine.

Hokie Joker Makes It Big!

At the ECU football game, I dressed up as the maroon and orange Joker. A professional photographer asked to take my picture and put it on his blog. Maybe you should go take a look at it. See if you can fine ole Hokie Joker

In this  exploration, I had to find a way to view the world differently. One suggestion it gave was wearing tinted glass.

I wore these:

It did alter my world. First, people looked at me funny.

When wearing these during the day, two things popped into my mind. It made my life feel like a flashback to the 1970’s, like often seen in movies. It made everything feel all warm and fuzzy. I stopped and stared at my poster of a Volkswagon Camper along a California beach. I felt so thrown back.

Secondly, When looking at lonely, desolate areas, It made it feel as if a nuclear war had broke out. I felt as if radiation made it seem extremely hot, and like I was the only man on earth.

I would recommend wearing these during the day as long as people are around. While your add it, buy a pair of Bell-Bottoms too.

Controversy!!!

Controversy has struck residents in every country and city around the world. This may include a moral issue, taxation, or “wasting” of tax payers dollars. So why should the city of Roanoke be any different?

In 1976, Poffs Federal Building in Roanoke received two warped and curved steel beams to adorn their courtyard. The artist who crafted it said the sculpture helps the viewer identify with the structure of the building. Recently, a 51 million dollar renovation has been bestowed upon this building. On top of the renovation, the city of Roanoke paid an art conservation group from Ohio $7,200 to travel to Roanoke and evaluate the pieces.

The McKay Lodge Fine Arts Conservation Laboratory of Oberlin concluded that two steel structures should be moved during the renovation. Of course, this would mean the sculptures would have to be dismantled, moved, and re-mantled. Then after the renovation is complete, the same steps will apply to get the structures to their original places.

The words dismantle, re-mantle, renovation, and art conservation may not mean anything to a passerby, but to a Roanoke resident, all they hear is “Cha-Ching” followed by the sound of a toilet flushing. Bob Goodlatte, the representative for Roanoke, along with many other Roanoke residents think that the renovation is a waste of money, not to mention the cost of examining the “artwork” outside.

I am a libertarian. This means I believe the government should stay out of peoples business. The government telling you what you will spend your money on is a form of dictatorship to me.

Today, we are millions of dollars in debt because of the government. It is pointless to spend $51 million on a renovation of a building that does not need it. Spending $7,200 for someone to tell you that you should move something valuable during construction is even more ludicrous.

I’m not saying art is a waste of space. I have many solutions to such a simple quandary. Roanoke is a large city; it is also home to many artists. If they must renovate the building, do not move the steel beams. If worse comes, and the steel is destroyed (I don’t see how), Hire  a few artists to construct a new piece of artwork. If your making the building newer, why not make the surrounding art newer as well?

If the city must keep the two steel beams, then do not make tax payers pay for them. When paying taxes, there should be necessary taxes, then optional one. The optional ones would include the arts. Let’s face it, some people cannot afford the taxes they are forced to pay. Once they pay these unreasonable taxes, the government squanders their hard earned money on unnecessary things.

This leads me to my next point. If keeping these structures are so important to government officials, then why don’t the officials take a pay cut in order to pay for this? In my opinion, government officials are grossly overpaid for doing nothing. I believe they, collectively can afford $21,000 to move the sculptures.

If a sculptor had not made the two beams of steel, viewers might not see this as artistic. But because of the sculptor, it is considered art.

I think that most  business people do not have a concept of art. They cannot look at a picture of a precariously perched pigeon on a peach tree and call it art. Instead, they need someone to point out to them “this is art”. For them, there are museums. Not many of them can tell you the meaning of a painting, or sculpture. They may describe how it makes them feel or say something from a architecture standpoint. Maybe that’s Andy Worhol had this idea when he painted a Campbell’s Tomato Soup can and told people it was art.

I’m not saying that Andy Worhol was not an artist. Quite contrary, I believe he took the small things in life and appreciated them. His pop art movement made people think about how they really feel about celebrities, soup, and everyday objects. I just believe Worhol was a marketing genius.

Like Worhol, artist examine everyday things and make extraordinary. To artists, everything around them can be made into art. For example, I walked around a city one day and found a vase on a landing. To a business person, or non-artist, it’s just a vase on a landing, but to me, it’s art. I took a picture of this everyday object. Just because it is not framed does not mean it is not art.

Museums are a great way to appreciate art and paintings from the past. If people want to see art, all they have to do is pay to enter in a museum. I believe it is more intriguing to try to find art in the open today. Just because the world is not in a frame does not mean it is not art.

With the Koff Government Building’s art, some people may not consider the beams art, but because someone tells us it is art, it is art. Government spending your money and telling you what is art, is like George Orwell’s classic “1984”. Of course, we are not to that point where the government controls your thoughts, but they do set up “guidelines” for what they consider art.

Whoever is in charge of the Koff Government Building renovation, should open up the doors for new artists to express themselves on the large scale of their courtyard. This way, when they pay the artist, or sculptor, they can influence people thoughts, in addition to the two steel beams.

Should people have to pay for the two structures already outside of the building? Since we are in America, there should be a vote taken on the issue. Some may want to keep it, others may want to leave it as is. After all, in today’s world we are all open to our own opinion. Whether you consider art a framed painting in the Taubman Museum of Art, or a simple vase on a landing, Art, like what it describes, is always open to discussion.

Document Something of your travels.

On this day i decided to take a walk around my block and find interesting things on my walk

The Plastic red cups that litter my apartment

The BT sign outside of my apartment

A crumpled leaf on the pavement, down the road from my apartment

a “ONE WAY” street sign down the road

A wooden post in the blades of grass

A rusted pipe coming out of a block of cement

Now this one was interesting. A rusted and cracked ride at a child’s playground. It reminds me of a run down circus.
